Magnet Program

SCHOOL YEAR 2019-2020

I would like to take this time to welcome you to the Walter Francis Bishop Magnet School of the Arts. I have had the pleasure of working with the members of the District 28 Magnet Team and our Magnet Specialists as we have transformed this school into the “STEAM” place that you see today.

We have worked diligently to expose students to a new way of learning and we have provided them with opportunities and experiences that we could only have dreamed of, if not for this Federal Magnet Grant.

We have been able to foster a learning community among the teachers as they create and revise Project Based Learning Units of study. Our student’s have been able to explore and showcase their talents through residencies such as; Alvin Ailey, Turtle Bay Music School, Midori & Friends, Dancing Classrooms, LAMP, Marquis Studio’s Architectural Studies and Lego Education. Our teacher’s have also tapped into hidden talents as they engage students in STEM Club, Art Club, Guitar Club, Bricks4Kids, a Step Team as well as a Drama Club.

School spaces have been transformed into a Dance Classroom, Multi-Media Lab equipped with 3D Printers, a Multi-Purpose Room that will be transformed into a Multiple Intelligences Classroom, a STEM Lab, an ARTS wing and our very own school museum. All classrooms are equipped with Promethean Boards or Smart TV’s, Elmo’s, laptop computers and iPads.

Some of our proudest moments have come when we are able to engage parents in activities with their children. Every month we host a Magnet Tour to recruit parents. When they walk in, they are able to meet with other families as well as engage in STEAM related activities.

This has been an incredible journey and it is my hope that you will be able to see and feel the love and energy within this building.

Enjoy your visit!!

Sincerely,
Tiffany Hicks
Principal
