PE

School Year 2023-2024

November 23

Students in grades 4&5 will start the NYC Fitnessgram testing period. Students will first be assessed on their Cardiovascular Endurance by participating in the Pacer Test. This is a running test that starts slow and gets progressively more difficult. Students will have two opportunities to achieve the Healthy Fitness Zone score based on their age.

After learning underhand & overhand throwing and catching in October we will transition to throwing and striking for students in grades K-5. Students in grades K-2 will be striking with a short handle implement (lollipop paddle) and students in grades 3-5 will be striking with a modified and soft padded baseball bat.

SEPTEMBER 2023

Dear Parents / Guardians,

Welcome to another exciting year at P.S. 160. Your child’s Physical Education teachers will be either Mr.Macchia or Ms.Carey. We are both looking forward to an active and fun filled school year.

Your child’s health, nutrition and physical activity level is extremely important to us. In our Physical Education classes this year we will discuss healthy habits, proper nutrition and ways that we can stay active. We will also make sure that all PE classes are moving and as active as possible in each of their 45-minute periods.

This year Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades will be starting out the first 2-3 months participating in whole group games such as various tag games and small group games involving different types of movements. As the year progresses we will begin our skills based sports units. We will separately learn the skills that make up a sport (Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, Tennis, Track and Field), We will put them all together at the end of the 5-6 week unit and play that sport as a group.

Grades 3, 4 and 5 will be participating in Fitnessgram testing this year. This consists of 1 running test (Pacer test), 2 muscular strength tests (push-ups and curl-ups) and 2 flexibility tests (sit & reach and trunk lift).

When Fitnessgram testing is complete grades 3, 4 and 5 will begin their skills based sports units.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at 929-398-3140 or by email at jmacchia2@schools.nyc.gov or mcarey8@schools.nyc.gov.

Sincerely,

Mr.Macchia & Ms. Carey
